Raw Material Weighing in a Pharmaceutical Plant! by Eric Ittah

A plant where pharmaceutical products are manufactured consist of different areas where different stages are carried out during the analysis and development of different pharmaceutical products. Though all the areas in a pharmaceutical plant are equally important, but there is one area that must be given due consideration. It is the area in which the raw materials are weighed and transferred to clean containers. Different companies call this area by different names such as Weigh room, Fractionation, Dispensary, Dispensing and Central Weigh.

The design of the Weight room depends upon on the type of processing that take place in the process area. A basic weigh room consists of three sections. These three sections are unprocessed material staging, weighing and work-in-process staging.

Generally, there are three basic principles that drive the design of any pharmaceutical weigh room. The first one is unidirectional flow of materials and personnel, second is differentiation between hazardous and non-hazardous materials and third is storage of manufacturing items and spaces.
