Biotechnology – A diverse field of science! by Eric Ittah


Biotechnology is a term that was coined in 1919 by a Hungarian agricultural engineer Karl Ereky. He coined this term because he foresaw a time when biology could be used for converting raw materials into useful products. This term describes the merging of biology with technology.  A number of pharmaceutical companies have realized the importance of biotechnology. Today, there is a growing list of biotechnology products in the market. Some of these products include medicines, medical equipment, biofuels, biomaterials and pollution controls.

The entire field of biotechnology is diverse and the pharmaceutical companies are reaping the results if this science, specially the companies dealing in medicines. Biotechnology medicines, also known as biotech medicines are large molecules that are similar or identical to proteins and other complex substances are medicines that body relies on to stay healthy. Generally these medicines are injected or infused into the body to ensure that the complex structure is protected from being broken down.
